Natural sounds by sea creatures infiltrated by man-made noise pollution rattle and buzz loudly in the doomed, white-tiled tunnel. The deep bass tones bounce off the hard surfaces and vibrate right through my body.

Walking through the 370 m long and 15 m deep tunnel in this enclosed space under the Thames the sounds from the installation mix with acoustic distortions created by footsteps and voices. Every noise reverberates and echoes. The tunnel, an otherwise familiar place, transforms into an otherworldly, eerie scenery. The jogger turns menacing, a group of kids a mob, the silhouette of the cyclist in the distance becomes spongy, the tunnel the belly of a Walrus.

The installation is a collaboration with the National Maritime Museum. It is supported by the Arts Council England, British Antarctic Survey and the Greenwich Community Arts Fund.
